What's Beyond a VIN Search?
You've done a VIN Search and didn't find quite what you need to know. Now what? Post your question on the VIN Message Boards and get the input of your fellow VINners, including those extra special VINners, the VIN Consultants. If you've never posted, there are plenty of resources to make you a posting pro in no time. - The How To course meets the first 3 Wednesdays of every month. Week 2 focuses on the VIN Message Boards. If you don't have time to attend the live sessions, there is a self-study option.
- The Message Board FAQs are a quick reference to the basic (How can I find my post to check for replies?) and more advanced (How can I get input from people in multiple folders?) features of the Message Boards.
- Kim Schiller's rounds on How to Get the Most from Your Post.
The next time you need help with a challenging case or just want to share a laugh, post to the VIN Message Boards and connect with your fellow VINners!

Develop and Hone Your Communication Skills!
Young or old, many veterinarians are great scientists but could use some help with communication skills. We all thank Dr. John McCarthy, (St. George's University) for contributing The Art of Successful Communication in Veterinary Practice For a New Graduate to help you identify your problem areas and suggest methods for improving your skills.

Low plasma taurine concentration in Newfoundland dogs is associated with low plasma methionine and cyst(e)ine concentrations and low taurine synthesis
Although taurine is not dietarily essential for dogs, taurine deficiency and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are sporadically reported in large-breed dogs. Taurine status and husbandry were examined in 216 privately owned Newfoundlands, a giant dog breed with high incidence of idiopathic DCM (1.3-2.5%). Newfoundlands would appear to have a higher dietary sulfur amino acid requirement than Beagles, a model breed used in nutrient requirement determinations.
Hypertonic saline resuscitation improves intestinal microcirculation in a rat model of hemorrhagic shock
Small-volume hypertonic saline resuscitation (HTSR) can be used as a resuscitation regimen at the trauma scene and for selective clinical conditions where hypotensive resuscitation is indicated. HTSR improves intestinal perfusion by selective vasodilation of the precapillary arterioles even at MAP close to shock levels.
Canine distemper virus uses both the anterograde and the hematogenous pathway for neuroinvasion
We observed CNS invasion through two distinct pathways: anterogradely via the olfactory nerve and hematogenously through the choroid plexus and cerebral blood vessels. CNS invasion only occurred after massive infection of the lymphatic system and spread to the epithelial cells throughout the body. While at early time points, mostly immune and endothelial cells were infected, the virus later spread to glial cells and neurons. Together, the results suggest similarities in the timing, target cells, and CNS invasion routes of CDV, members of the Morbillivirus genus, and even other neurovirulent paramyxoviruses like Nipah and mumps viruses.
Contrast enhanced ultrasound for radio frequency ablation of canine prostates: initial results
We determined the feasibility of contrast enhanced ultrasound for radio frequency ablation of the entire prostate as a method of minimally invasive treatment for prostate cancer in a canine model. We found that contrast enhanced pulse inversion harmonic imaging is able to guide, monitor and control radio frequency ablation of the entire prostate.

Using Thoracic Radiographs As A Screening Test Leads To Many False Positives
Ignoring the issues of prior probability of disease markedly reduces the value of a screening test.
I Pulled A Wasp Out Of This Dog's Ear!
Standard Poodle presented for acute ear problem. On evaluation, found a wasp-like bug deep between the pars flaccida (PF) and the tympanic membrane (TM). Thought the pictures were pretty neat.
