New On VeterinaryPartner.com:

A retrospective study of clinical findings, treatment and outcome in 143 dogs with pericardial effusion
Dogs undergoing pericardiectomy had a median survival of 1218 days, compared with 532 days for those not undergoing surgery.

Capnography in Dogs
Capnography can be used to identify potentially life-threatening situations such as esophageal intubation, circuit disconnections, a defective anesthetic system, hypoventilation, hypotension, and airway obstruction.

Reproductive Effects of Canine Herpesvirus
Asymptomatic infection with canine herpesvirus is widespread within the domesticated dog population. However, infection with the virus may have serious consequences on naïve gravid females and neonates.

Impact of Giardia vaccination on asymptomatic Giardia infections in dogs at a research facility
At weeks 4, 8, 12, and 16 following vaccination, there were more Giardia-positive dogs in the vaccinated group compared with the controls. At week 20, an equal number of dogs were Giardia positive, and at week 24, fewer dogs were positive in the vaccinated group than in the control group. However, there was no significant difference between the 2 groups.

How To Teach An Old Doc New Tricks? Doctor Offering Limited Diagnostics And Treatments; Workups At EC vs RDVM
One other method that fits this same mold is participating right here on VIN. No kidding, it's like ongoing CE. It would be ridiculous for me to try to list the innumerable things I have learned here that I have applied to my practice of medicine. I cannot overstate how helpful it has been, and what a better DVM I am for it. I would strongly encourage your associate to get involved in VIN and especially hang out and participate in the Emergency, Anesthesia, Neuro, Radiology, Int Medicine and Cardiology boards. We all know how addictive learning on here can be, now it may be time to get your associate hooked. VIN is my every-night burnout remedy.

What Should I Do About My Surgical Error?
FWIW, I *never* place a gauze in a belly unless there's an instrument attached to it, and locked. Just a thought to prevent a lot of future anxiety. OTOH, I once left a hemostat in a belly after a fat dog splenectomy. Worst thing I ever did, but even at the time I could understand how it happened. There's no shame in making a mistake ... once.

Anorexic, Lethargic Baby Goat
Clostridium perfringens Type A is one of the most commonly isolated agents from ulcers in neonates. Sarcina lutea has also been isolated from ulcers in calves. It seems like either agent, clostridium perfringens or Sarcina, occurs in neonates that are ingesting a lot of milk each day, and are in an environment where the ulcers are endemic, probably due to an high environmental load.
