Double Rounds this Weekend!
The first rounds this Sunday, January 6 at 8:00 pm ET, features panelists from AAFP and AAHA reviewing the AAFP/AAHA Pain Management Guidelines.

The second rounds session is open to you and your staff -- so tell them to meet you there and join Philip J. Seibert, Jr., CVT for Pregnancy in Practice at 10:00 ET.

NOTE: Staff members should register early for VSPN to be welcomed in time for the session!

VINners use the Rounds link in the Main Navigation bar to join the discussion. VSPNners use the link on the VSPN Main Page.

To discover what other interesting rounds topics are coming soon, see This Week's Rounds Schedule.

If you can't attend, be sure to check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN or next Tuesday's VIN This Week for links to the transcript of the discussion.

New Medical FAQ Added
We all know that accurate normal values depend on the laboratory and the methodology used to evaluate blood chemistries, but sometimes you just can't remember if an anion gap of 3 is bad news or good news.

VIN's newest MedFAQ, Biochemical Reference Intervals And Conversions, will give you a quick idea of whether the results someone has posted on the message boards are normal or abnormal.

The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. Because many topics have been discussed multiple times on the message boards, the number of "hits" you get can be overwhelming.

To help you, the VIN team of consultants (and other experts) continue to create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) of topics commonly discussed on the message boards. Save time, check out the Medical FAQs, before you post.

Participate in Clinical Research Studies!
Between the demands of practice and personal life, your precious free time (if you have any) is probably limited. Did you know you can contribute to veterinary research without leaving your home or office! Simply visit the Clinical Trials & Research Projects page to find a study recruiting patients. Stop back frequently by adding www.vin.com/research to your MyStuff or select "Clinical Trials" in the VINDEX.

Recently added trials include:

Need Help?
Having trouble logging in to VIN? Questions about your membership? Can't find that reference you need for a tough case? Help is a click, email or phone call away! (Hint: you can find this page anytime by clicking HELP on the main VIN Navigation Bar).

Approach to the respiratory patient
This article focuses on reviewing the function of the respiratory system and how best to identify and diagnose cats and dogs with respiratory disease by implementing a thorough history and physical examination, as well as appropriate diagnostic testing.

Hyperlipidemia in dogs and cats
Increased triglyceride or cholesterol concentrations will often normalize if they are caused by a secondary disease that is successfully treated.

Interstitial lung diseases
Several noninfectious nonneoplastic interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) have been recognized in dogs and cats. Overall, these ILDs are poorly characterized, although awareness of the conditions based on descriptions of clinical case series may be increasing.

Salivary mucoceles in cats: a retrospective study of seven cases
In this case series, the most common presenting complaint was related to the presence of a ranula, which may cause respiratory stridor or gastrointestinal signs. Although uncommon, a salivary mucocele should be a differential diagnosis in cats with any intraoral swelling.

Dyspnea after thoracocentesis
15 year old cat came in on emergency a couple hours ago, emaciated but NOSF on exam except dyspneic, open mouthed breathing. Gums were still pink at that time. First RG showed increased opacity; drained 260cc straw to pink colored fluid from chest.

Restraint facilities for cattle cesareans
Am building a new clinic which is primarily equine/small animal but will provide emergency service for cows (until I can get the business going to hire a REAL cow vet). I will have an area in the clinic to be able to do C-sections.

Suggestion for giving pills to untouchable cats
These Spawn Of Satan cats present not only a diagnostic, but an ethical challenge as well. If we work them up and identify a problem, can the client safely treat them? Many times, the answer is no.

Is this corporate contract for relief work reasonable? Have attorney evaluate before signing
Please have an attorney who specializes in contracts look at it. I would not sign it as is. They are protecting their own legal butts, and it is up to you to protect yours.
