CLINICAL STUDIES ON THE EFFECT OF DENTISEPT IN DOGS WITH GINGIVITIS

Borissov I

Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop a medication intended for the treatment of different forms of gingivitis in dogs, and to evaluate its clinical efficacy in independent and combined use.

Material and Methods: The preparation Dentisept is manufactured by Primavet Ltd, Sofia, Bulgaria. It contains 5.0 g chlorhexidine, 10.0 g ascorbic acid, 10.0 g zinc oxide, 200.0 g citric acid and 1000 ml of glycerol. The preparation was applied to the gingiva of 88 dogs with various forms of gingivitis. The therapeutic efficacy was periodically assessed via dental and microbiological examinations, evaluation of salivary pH and the depth of gingival pockets.

Results: Dentisept changed salivary pH from acid to alkaline. Before treatment, the pH was 5.9 - 6.4 and afterwards it was 7.1 - 7.7. After 2 weeks of twice daily treatment, the depth of gingival pockets decreased from 5.3 to 4.9 mm. The study also showed that the independent use of Dentisept had a clinical efficacy of 86%, but combined with Stomorgyl was 97% efficacious.

Conclusions: Dentisept has good antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and changes salivary pH from acid to alkaline. It is effective in prophylaxis and in the treatment of gingivitis in dogs.
