DEMONSTRATION OF THE FIELD EFFICACY OF REVOLUTION FOR THE CONTROL OF FLEAS IN DOGS AND CATS BY VISUAL ASSESSMENT

Weinberg HA, Trettien AL, and Simms SE

The efficacy of Revolution (selamectin) for the treatment and control of fleas on dogs and cats presented as patients to 210 veterinary practitioners in 42 states across the US was evaluated. Eight hundred and thirty-four dogs and 472 cats were enrolled in the study. Treatments were administered at the label dose. One animal in each household was required to have 15 fleas prior to treatment for the household to be included. On days 0, 30 and 60, a count was performed to determine the number of viable fleas present on each animal and Revolution was applied. All animals in a household were required to be enrolled and no other topical or environmental flea control products were allowed. Percentage reductions in geometric mean flea thumb counts for Revolution treatments on days 30, 60 and 90 versus day 0 were determined for both dogs and cats. Percentage reductions in geometric mean flea counts for both dogs and cats were 95.8%, 99.0% and 99.5% on days 30, 60, and 90, respectively. These results show that Revolution used alone is highly effective in treating and controlling flea infestations on dogs and cats from various geographic regions of the US.
