DIAG400-0901: Thoracic Radiology: Pitfalls of Interpretation and Case Discussions

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Overview:
This course is designed to emphasize the problems and decision making encountered in a clinical setting and the material will be organized around common presenting clinical signs. The instructor will strive to review important interpretation skills that have been long forgot, and will also discuss new ideas and concepts pertaining to thoracic imaging. Where appropriate, the basic applications of thoracic ultrasound imaging will also be discussed to demonstrate its use in case evaluation. There will be two discussion sets in the course. The first will address problem areas for practitioners in thoracic evaluation- normal variants and causes for over-interpretation. The second discussion will be case based and will act to sharpen the interpretation skills of the participants. An interactive CD will be utilized in the course to promote discussion and allow the participants to self-assess themselves and their radiology interpretation skills. The CD will contain all of the discussion material and images and can be used as a reference for future review. The participants will receive the CD approximately 2 weeks before the course so the cases can be reviewed before the scheduled discussion times.
Week 1: Pitfalls of Thoracic Radiology
This discussion set will demonstrate the most common normal variations that are encountered in clinical practice. The pitfalls of over-interpretation that are often responsible for misdiagnosis will also be reviewed. The radiographic variation of multiple different breeds will also be discussed.
Week 2 and 3: Clinical Case Discussions
This discussion will utilize twenty clinical cases to emphasize interpretation principles in all of the important areas of the thorax. The cases are meant to act as a platform from which a discussion can ensue about how the radiographic signs were used to arrive at a prioritized list of differentials, and about the appropriate next diagnostic step. The cases range from being common, yet confounding, problems encountered in everyday practice to more unusual cases. The point of the unusual cases is to sharpen interpretive skills and broaden the breadth of the participants. Where appropriate, additional material and imaged will be provided in the discussion to illustrate variations of some of the cases and to allow the participants to see examples of related diseases on the differential list. Overall, this discussion set will emphasize important radiographic findings and the clinical aspects of the cases rather than radiographic minutia.
