SAIM700-0600 - Between a rock and a hard place: Recurrent Urolithiasis

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to provide updated information concerning management of calcium oxalate, urate, and cystine uroliths in dogs and cats.

COURSE OUTLINE:

WEEK 1 - Discussion on management of calcium oxalate uroliths in dogs and cats including surgical and non-surgical approaches, and preventative measures. Cases will be used to highlight information.

WEEK 2 - Discussion on management of urate uroliths in dogs and cats using cases to highlight information.

Upon completion of this 2-week course, you should be able to:

  1. Define undersaturation, saturation, and oversaturation, and how states of saturation relate to uroliths formation and management.
  2. Describe risk factors for calcium oxalate uroliths.
  3. Describe voiding urohydropropulsion and retrograde urohydropropulsion.
  4. Describe dietary characteristics and specific diets that may aid in preventing recurrence of calcium oxalate uroliths in dogs and cats.
  5. Describe risk factors for urate uroliths.
  6. Describe dissolution and preventative protocols for urate uroliths in dogs and cats including mechanism of action of allopurinol and potential complications.

MESSAGE BOARD DISCUSSIONS: Discussions will begin on the start date of the course, and will continue for two weeks following the real time session. Boards will be monitored by the instructor for one week following the last real-time session.
