COURSE DESCRIPTION

Treating cats and dogs with diabetes can be frustrating. What role do blood glucose curves, urine glucose, fructosamine, oral hypoglycemics and diet play? In this course, you will learn how to approach initial and long term therapy. Dogs and cats differ but both need to be started on insulin as soon as possible after making the diagnosis of diabetes. We'll discuss why insulin therapy is needed to minimize the detrimental effects of glucose toxicity and beta cell exhaustion and how to establish insulin doses. Why are there so many types of insulin? What kind is best for cats? For dogs? Is there a best type?

By participating in this course, you should better understand:

This course will emphasize the team approach to the management of diabetic patients. Thus, we encourage both veterinarians and veterinary technicians from the same practices to enroll. This course is not designed as an introductory course for technicians. VSPN enrollees must be actively involved in the nursing care of diabetic canines and felines.

MESSAGE BOARD DISCUSSIONS:
Discussions will begin on the start date of the course and continue for 7 days following the last real-time session.

CE HOURS: 2
