CLEARING CACHE, COOKIES, AND BROWSING HISTORY
- CACHE
Each time a user visits a website, files downloaded with
each web page (including html, images, audio,
Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript scripts) are saved
to a temporary internet files folder, creating a cache of
the web page content on the user's computer hard disk. The
next time the user visits the cached website, only changed
content needs to be downloaded from the Internet; the
unchanged data is available in the cache.
Despite the name 'temporary', the cache of a website
remains stored on the hard disk of the users PC until the
user manually clears the cache.
When a cache is old or corrupt, or doesn't update with
the website changed content, then the web page can display
with errors or outdated content. Clearing the cache on
your browser forces the browser to load the entire content
of each web page visited. This ensures that the content
displayed for the web page is current.
Since each browser maintains its own cache, it is recommended
that you clear cache once a week for each of the browsers you
use regularly.
- COOKIES
HTTP cookies are parcels of text sent by a server to a Web
client (usually a browser) and then sent back unchanged by
the client each time it accesses that server. Cookies are
used for authenticating, session tracking (state maintenance),
and maintaining specific information about users, such as
site preferences or the contents of their electronic shopping
carts.
- BROWSING HISTORY
Every time you enter a website address into the URL field of
your browser, that website address is added to a history of
visited web sites.
You should get into the habit of clearing cache, cookies,
and history on a regular basis for each of your browsers.
We will provide instructions for clearing cache, cookies, and
history on some of the more common varieties of internet browsers.
DO THIS WEEKLY (i.e., before attending a real-time session).
It will not affect your favorites, bookmarks, or saved website
addresses.
NOTE: The following are generic instructions about clearing
temporary internet files. The specifics, e.g., menus
and wordings, for individual versions of the software
may differ slightly. If you experience difficulties,
contact VIN's technical support team at
1.800.846.0028 ext 127 (Wally) or 1.530.756.4881 (outside the US).
They will also provide assistance if you have a different operating
system version or browser.
