COURSE OBJECTIVES
For generations we have been told that animals "don't feel pain", feel pain "differently", or that allowing a patient to be painful aids in our management of the patient's medical/surgical problem (so if they don't feel it, how does this work??). In this course we will attempt to put to rest, once and for all, this myth as well as other common misconceptions that have evolved over the years.
The concepts of what IS pain, how to recognize it our patients, why allowing a patient to be painful is detrimental, and how to easily and effectively implement effective pain management will be discussed. Pre-emptive analgesia will be the focus, with discussions focusing on why being proactive, rather than the traditional reactive, is better for your patients and your practice.
OUTLINE OF TOPICS
Wk 1: What is pain? Acute vs short term vs chronic/long term pain. The 4 modalities of pain. Physiological responses to pain.
Wk 2: The NSAID's and Locals. Sedatives (ie ace, diazepam) and their role in pain in our patients. General anesthetics and their short comings.
Wk 3: Opioids: Who, what, when, why, how.
Wk 4: Case examples: How would you.....? Focus on thinking and rationale, how to know if your plan is not working, what to look out for, and what you could do differently. Real cases the instructors have been involved with over the years will be used to demonstrate successes as well as failures.
