PHAR103-0403: The Role of Susceptibility Data in Antimicrobial Selection
INSTRUCTOR:
Dawn Boothe, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DACVP
DATES:
April 6th – April 14th, 2003
Interactive session: Sunday April 6th,2003; 9:30pm - 11:00pm ET (USA)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This continuing education unit will help veterinarians and their patients more fully benefit from culture and susceptibility data through improved drug selection and the design of a dosing regimen. Specifically, veterinarians will become familiar with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and the role this data can or should not have in the selection of an antimicrobial and the selection of a dose. Likewise, clinicians will become more familiar with the importance of antimicrobial pharmacokinetic data and the role it can or should not play in the selection of a drugs and dosing regimens. Concepts such the importance of selecting a "bactericidal" vs "bacteriostatic" drug, or "time" versus "concentration" dependancy will be addressed. Modifications of dosing regimens to compensate for host or microbial factors (such as inflammatory response, location of infection and virulence) will be included.
