COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is intended to review cyclooxygenase inhibition, including the new COX-2 inhibitors. The rationale behind their use for pain management will be discussed, along with precautions. Practical applications for the use of new coxib-type COX-2 inhibitors in veterinary medicine will also be discussed.

At the end of this course, participants will be better able to understand:

• Review of basic pain pathways and the role of preemptive analgesia in the perioperative period
• Describe the arachidonic acid pathway, including cyclooxygenase enzymes
• Understand the differences between traditional NSAIDs and the newer COX-2 specific inhibitors
• Understand the mechanisms by which the newer COX-2 inhibitors may help optimize analgesia in the perioperative period
• Understand the safe use of these drugs in patients undergoing general anesthesia and in the postoperative period
