basic course will be open to
veterinarians and veterinary staff actively interested in
home care and end of life issues.

Course Information:
In this presentation, we will learn to help clients provide home care for the purposes
of comfort and to avoid side-effects of their companion's illness. We'll discuss some
tools for objective assessment of quality of life and different ways to help the client
prioritize treatments. How do we know when a patient is "suffering"? When is the
"right time" to assist the ending of a life? And, how do we, as healthcare providers,
cope with this?

Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand how to support cell, organ, and body functions
- understand how to alleviate discomfort/optimize comfort
- feel more confident knowing when the time for euthanasia has come
- help the client prepare for the end and ensure an easy, dignified death
- provide closure for all of the care givers
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Margie Scherk graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1982.
In 1986 she opened Cats Only Veterinary Clinic in Vancouver, Canada practicing there
until 2008. She achieved ABVP Board certification in feline practice in 1995 and
published several clinical trials whilst in practice. She has written numerous book
chapters and is an active international speaker as well as enjoying teaching on-line.
She is Co-editor of the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery. Margie has served
extensively in the American Association of Feline Practitioners as well other veterinary
organizations. Her interests include all things feline, but in particular, analgesia,
the peculiarities of the feline digestive system and enabling more positive interactions
with cats.

VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
