COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course will provide participants with an interactive review via internet presentations of basic processes in coagulation/hemostasis and laboratory tests commonly available for assessment of coagulation/hemostasis. Information about correct specimen collection and handling and interpretation of laboratory results will be included. Common problems and challenges in laboratory result generation and interpretation will be covered. Case study material will be used for illustration and discussion. Course notes will be provided. This should provide participants with the following:
- Opportunity to review basic pathophysiologic mechanisms associated with coagulation/hemostasis
- Opportunity to acquire knowledge about correct types of specimens, handling and submission of specimens for coagulation testing
- Become more comfortable in interpretation of coagulation testing results
- Opportunity for interactive discussion with presenters and other participants regarding coagulation testing problems and challenges in practice
- Opportunity to study case material and coagulation testing results from a variety of types of clinical cases, including hemophilia, vWd, thrombocytopenia, anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity, DIC or other conditions.
These experiences should enable them to be more comfortable and confident in addressing cases and the use of coagulation testing for evaluation of these cases.
