Course Description

This is Module 2 of a comprehensive course series covering canine and feline anesthesia for veterinarians.

Canine and Feline Anesthesia Module 2 will focus on anesthesia and special considerations for canine and feline patients with heart disease, diabetes, hepatic dysfunction and neurological dysfunction.

Modules 1 through 4 are available for enrollment. Module 1 is a prerequisite for taking all other modules in this series.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Week 1 (April 21): Anesthesia for Patients With Cardiac Disease (Rishniw)

• General review of cardiac physiology and the role of the heart in oxygen transport
• Determining the degree of cardiac compromise in the patient
• How the nature and the degree of cardiac compromise alters a patient's tolerance of anesthesia
• Anesthesia strategies based on anticipated problems: premedication, induction, maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, support, recovery, pain management
• Cases to be discussed:
  • Anesthesia for the dog with mitral valvular insufficiency undergoing dentistry with extractions
  • Anesthesia for a cat with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy undergoing dentistry with extractions

Week 2 (April 28): Anesthesia for the Diabetic Dog and Cat (Brunson, Brock)

• Determining the anesthesia risk
• How diabetes alter your patients tolerance of anesthesia
• Anesthesia strategies based on anticipated problems: premedication, induction, maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, support, recovery, pain management
• Cases to be discussed:
  • Canine diabetic patient requiring eye enucleation after cataract surgery complications
  • Fractious diabetic feline undergoing "TECA" or pharyngeal polyp removal

Week 3 (May 5): Anesthesia for the Dog and Cat with Brain Disease or Injury (Kruse-Elliott, Jurney)

• Determining the degree of CNS compromise
• How CNS compromise alters your patients tolerance of anesthesia
• How anesthesia affects the compromised brain
• Anesthesia strategies based on anticipated problems: premedication, induction, maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, support, recovery, pain management
• Cases to be discussed:
  • The dog with seizure disorder requiring cystotomy for removal of oxalate stones
  • The cat with head trauma requiring jaw fracture stabilization

Week 4 (May 12): Anesthesia for the Dog with Hepatopathy (Honkavaara, Wilson)

• Determining degree of hepatic dysfunction
• How hepatic dysfunction alters a dog's tolerance of anesthesia
• How anesthesia affects the compromised liver
• Anesthesia strategies based on anticipated problems: premedication, induction, maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, support, recovery, pain management
• Case to be discussed:
  • The dog with hepatic disease requiring dental care for the treatment of severe periodontal disease

Discussions will begin on the start date of the course and will continue for one week following the last real time session.

CE HOURS: 8

$160 (144.00 early bird special if registered by April 7, 2010).

COURSE WITHDRAWAL AND REFUND POLICY: Withdrawal prior to the listed start date of a course entitles the registrant to a complete refund or a credit toward a future VIN CE course, whichever is preferred. Withdrawal within 1 week after the listed start date (i.e. including no more than one real-time session) entitles the registrant to a credit toward any future VIN CE course. (Does not apply to courses with only one real-time session.) After the first real-time session, a registrant may withdraw due to special circumstances and receive prorated credit towards a future VIN course. These requests will be handled on an individual basis. The amount of the prorated credit will be determined based on 65% of the time remaining in the course at the time of withdrawal. It is not possible to withdraw retroactively.
